League bowling rules — scoring, frames, handicaps, foul lines, and lineups for recreational bowling leagues per USBC playing rules.
Players
Teams of 3–5
Game
10 frames; series of 3 games
Scoring
Strikes/spares; 300 perfect
Handicap
% of (basis − average)
Max 16 lbs; USBC-approved; no altering surface mid-game
Bowling balls may not exceed 16 pounds and must be on the USBC approved list for sanctioned play; altering ball surface during a game is illegal.
USBC Rule 16
Typically 90% of (basis score − average)
League handicaps level teams: commonly 90% of the difference between a basis score (e.g., 220) and the bowler’s average, recalculated as averages update.
USBC Rule 100e
Absentee/vacancy scores per league rules
Leagues define absentee scores (bowler average − 10 is common) and vacancy scores so short-handed teams still compete. Substitutes bowl with their own average or the league sub rule.
10 frames; 2 balls per frame (3 in the 10th)
A game is ten frames. Strike = all ten pins on the first ball; spare = the rest on the second. Striking or sparing the tenth frame earns bonus ball(s).
USBC Rule 2
Allowed with notice for missed weeks
Most leagues permit pre-bowling scores for planned absences with captain/secretary notice; unannounced misses fall to absentee scores.
Crossing = 0 on that ball; pins reset if first ball
Touching or crossing the foul line at delivery scores zero for that ball. On a first-ball foul, all ten pins are reset for the second ball (max spare score of 10).
USBC Rule 5
Pins knocked by ball/pins count; kickback rebounds count
Pins toppled by the ball or other pins (including off the kickbacks) count. Pins knocked over by a ball leaving the gutter or by the pinsetter do not — request a re-rack.
USBC Rule 6
Per-game + series points (e.g., 2-2-2-2)
Match points are typically awarded per game won plus a series point — e.g., two points per game and two for total pins, handicap included.
Strike = 10 + next 2 balls; spare = 10 + next ball
A strike scores ten plus your next two deliveries; a spare scores ten plus the next one. Twelve consecutive strikes is a perfect 300.
USBC Rule 3
Yield to the bowler on your right; one lane each side
When adjacent bowlers are up simultaneously, the bowler on the right goes first. Stay off the approach until it’s your turn.
