Basketball Rules

Recreational basketball rules — game clock, team size, fouls and bonus, scoring, and overtime for adult rec leagues, adapted from NFHS/FIBA.

Based on NFHS / FIBA rules 10 rules Official baseline

Players

5v5 (rec: also 3v3)

Game length

2 × 20 min running clock (typ.)

Court

94 × 50 ft (rec: 84 ft common)

Scoring

2 / 3 pointers, 1 pt FT

Players & Teams 2

Co-ed Modifications

Common: min 2 women on court; some use 2-pt women’s arc bonus

Co-ed divisions typically require at least two women on court at all times; some leagues score women’s three-pointers as four or add similar bonuses — check the league rule set.

Team Size

5 on court; min 4 to start

Five players per side on court. Leagues commonly allow starting with four to avoid forfeits; rosters usually carry 8–12.

Game Format 3

Game Clock

2 × 20 min running; stop clock last 2 min

Most rec leagues play two 20-minute halves with a running clock, switching to a stopped clock in the final two minutes of the second half if the margin is within a league-set threshold (commonly ≤10).

Overtime

3 min stop-clock; regular season may end tied

Playoff overtime is commonly 3 minutes with a stopped clock in the final minute. Many leagues let regular-season games end tied after one OT.

Timeouts

2 per half (typ.), 1 in overtime

Rec leagues typically allow two timeouts per half (no carryover) and one per overtime period; the clock stops during timeouts even when otherwise running.

Gameplay 2

Team Fouls & Bonus

Bonus at 7 team fouls; double bonus at 10

On the 7th team foul of a half the opponent shoots one-and-one; on the 10th, two shots. Shooting fouls are always two (or three) free throws.

NFHS Rule 4-8

Shot Clock

None in most rec leagues

Most rec leagues play without a shot clock; referees may apply a five-second closely-guarded count and stall warnings late in games.

Scoring 1

Scoring

2 inside the arc, 3 beyond, 1 per free throw

Field goals count 2 points, or 3 from beyond the three-point arc. Free throws count 1.

NFHS Rule 5

Conduct & Safety 2

Dunking

Legal in play; no hanging on the rim

Dunking is legal during live play. Hanging on the rim (except to protect a player underneath) is a technical foul, and pregame dunking is commonly barred by facility rules.

Player Foul-out

5 personal fouls

A player is disqualified on their fifth personal foul. Two technical fouls also disqualify and typically carry a league suspension review.
